Private Chef vs Catering vs Cooking at Home for 14 People

For a group of 12 to 18 people, dinner can be one of the most expensive and logistically complicated parts of a San Diego trip.

There are four basic choices: cook at the house, order drop-off catering, hire a private chef, or take everyone to a restaurant. None is automatically best.

Cook at the house

Best for: everyday meals, family reunions, longer stays, budget-conscious groups.

The upside is obvious: lowest food cost and maximum flexibility. The downside is that somebody has to plan, shop, prep, cook, and clean.

Make it easier by choosing meals that scale: taco bars, pasta bakes, rice bowls, sheet-pan dinners, chili, big salads, sandwiches, and brunch casseroles.

Drop-off catering

Best for: birthdays, graduation weekends, game nights, casual celebrations.

Catering removes most cooking without paying for a full restaurant experience. It works especially well when you already have a good house for gathering.

Ask whether setup, serving equipment, utensils, and cleanup are included. Those details change the real convenience level.

Private chef

Best for: one memorable night.

A chef dinner is the splurge option, but it can make sense when you compare it with moving 14 people to a higher-end restaurant, arranging transportation, ordering drinks, tipping, and keeping everyone on schedule.

The house becomes the venue. People can use the pool, rooftop, hot tub, or game area before and after dinner.

Restaurant

Best for: groups that want the neighborhood experience more than time at the house.

Restaurants are great when everyone wants to go out, but reservations and transportation get harder as the group grows. For large parties, confirm seating style, deposits, cancellation terms, and whether the group will be split across tables.

Our favorite balance

For a multi-night stay, we like a mix: easy home cooking for most meals, one night out, and one special catered or chef experience if the budget allows.

That gives the organizer a break without turning every meal into an event.

Homes with strong kitchens and gathering spaces make this strategy much easier. Our La Jolla Shores group home is particularly useful when multiple dishes need oven space, while the La Jolla galley kitchen works well for buffet service into the common area.
